It's Almost Time To Say Goodbye

It Can you believe it? I can't! Time flew by but at the same time it's like I've been in the US for what feels like an eternity! Mentally I'm far far away from home...
Well, anyway.
Tomorrow I'm driving back to the Washington airport and will spent my last night in the US in an airport hotel. I know, I know. Not so sexy. But the most logic thing to do. My flight is on Friday afternoon, I have to bring back my car and I want to make sure to get there on time!
But hey, I'm not there yet. I spent a wonderful last day on Chincoteague island. I am very glad to have found this awesome place ... I can't wait to share some of the amazing pictures I took!
In the meantime - good night from Chincoteague!

Why I travel

Today, arriving on Chincoteague Island Virginia, I remembered why I love traveling.
I love it when I pick a place on instinct, like I did with Chincoteague, and find that my instinct was 100% right!
Have you ever heard of this place? If you are American you may. All the others no chance!
I discovered it while I was studying the map of this region. I did a bit of research but I kind of knew that I wanted to see the place with my own eyes. I just knew. My instinct was right. A magical place. Water, trees, marshes. And a wonderful beach.
There was another beach - an overcrowded one. I didn't like it. The place on the picture though was more difficult to get to (especially in this heat!).
Hence my surprise and my thankfulness!
I took some nice macro pictures that I will post as soon as I can sort them out on my computer at home. But look at these marshes. Isn't it like a painting?

Lazy Days

Lazy days spent at the pool. I wake up early, go on a very long walk along the ocean (it feels like I could walk all the way up to New York SMILE) and often I spot Dolphins, just there swimming, a couple of meters away. Awesome!
I listen to music, read a book. I am. I simply am. And obviously it doesn't hurt that my tan is getting nicer and nicer by the hour!
Tomorrow I'm heading to my last stop for this trip. More beach time, more walks. Hopefully more dolphins as well!

Chesapeake Bay

Whenever I will think back about my this year's trip to the US I will probably first think of St. Michaels on the Chesapeake Bay.. Not that I didn't like all the other places I visited so far. Not at all. It's just that St. Michaels kind of "talked to me". It had some kind of special energy that I loved. Son't know exactly what it was. Can't even say it was because of the weather (one morning it rained!) nor that it was because I did something extraordinary (the boat trip on the Chesapeake Bay was nice but not extraordinary).
I simply loved it.
The town was really cute, Beautiful houses. Nice harbor. Small but cute. Nice little shops. Friendly people. Nice restaurants. it's definitely a place to go back to!

PS: In the meantime I've arrived at the Atlantic Ocean and I am working on my sun tan! The weather is nice and I enjoy my dolce far niente!

Luck And Timing

Traveling is so much about luck and timing! Take my day as an example.

I left Annapolis (pictures will follow) and drove over the bridge to the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. My intention was to spend one night in Chestertown, a bit north of the bridge.
I arrived there and ... well, just turned around and drove south again. Some places just don't talk to me and I've learned to read the signs!
Nest destination: St. Michaels on the Chesapeake Bay.
Cute little town.
I drove up and down Main Street to get an impression and on a hunch (here's the luck I mentioned) I stopped in front of an inn. The Old Brick Inn. It turned out that I was lucky enough to get the last room. And I was even luckier because the house is just gorgeous colonial style (my room is under the roof - so cute).
I had lunch and then walked the streets when suddenly the sun disappeared behind dark clouds!
Oh my. A thunderstorm!
I run back to the inn (didn't get wet luckily!) and here I am now, enjoying my afternoon on the patio of the inn (here's the timing bit). Listening to the rain pouring down (it's still warm). Reading a book.

On The Road

I picked up my rental car at the airport this morning and drove to Annapolis, Maryland.
The drive went well, hahahaha. I got lost two times, took the wrong exit once, ended up in a small airport near Baltimore (don't ask!).
Oh my.
Was I tense!
Like super tense!
And then, when I thought that I would have to stop and ask for directions, what do I see?
A sign that read "Annapolis, 22 miles".
Was I happy!!
Really happy!
Arriving in Annapolis, I got lucky again. I found the visitor's center and a hotel shortly later.
Oh my, was I glad that everything went well in the end.

A road trip is like real life.
When you get desperate and you can't seem to find a way out of a situation ... just keep your faith and keep on going. The right sign will appear like magic!

PS: Annapolis is just gorgeous, by the way. There were a bit too many people for my gusto but it was Sunday and Father's Day ... a lot of families made their trip to the Chesapeake Bay (the gorgeous weather helped obviously!). It's gonna be better tomorrow!

I am rather proud of myself. I spent four whole days in Washington and didn't spend one minute in a shop.
Well, that's not totally true.
I spent one minute in a shop. I went in, did stroll around and left almost immediately.
Do you wonder what's wrong with me?
I just looked at the clothes, summer clothes obviously, and all I could think of was that

1) I already bought summer outfits this spring and
2) I never worn them until now (due to the rainy and cold weather we had in Europe up to now)

Why would I need more summer clothes?
I don't.
And that is the reason I left the shop one minute after entering.
And that is the reason why I am pretty proud of myself!

The Touristy Thing To Do

I had told you that I would buy a ticket to one of these hop on and off buses (that exist all over the world), right?
Well, I was right to do so. I still did a lot of walking (but I don't mind walking!) and thanks to these buses I got to see the Arlington Cemetery and Georgetown.
And you know what?
I even got sun burned (the buses don't have roofs - for a better view).
Oh my.
Friday started of cloudy and it even rained a bit (we had a big storm during the night!). Obviously, I didn't think of putting sun screen on when I left the hotel in the morning (I even took my umbrella). Well, I should have!
My nose is red and I am not talking about my decollete!
Oh my.
If you live in Europe you know that we didn't have much sun up to now so my skin must have been shocked after this day. hahaha

Washington: Some Pictures

I had a wonderful time. I didn't post as much as I would have wanted to. It's because the hotel I was staying in charged for WIFI in the rooms. I didn't want to spend this money so I was reduced to connect to the Internet in the lobby of the hotel (that was for free). So, you can imagine how that went!!
Anyway. Washington was wonderful and I thought that I'd share some pictures with you.

Having wonderful days in Washington

My days consist of walking and walking around and just enjoying myself!
I've been to almost all the museums I've wanted to visit and have checked out all the important sites like the White House etc.

Today and tomorrow I'm doing this so totally touristy thing (that I love it don't tell anybody!!): taking a hop on and off bus! The city is so huge, I can't do it all on foot. And as I want to visit Georgetown and the Arlington cemetery, I have no other choice.
Have a nice day, y'all! Mine certainly will be.

Washington D.C.

It's as beautiful as I remember!!

Washington DC

I've arrived in Washington! Happy and tired! I'm so jet lagged ... Wow, just wow.  It's not even 7 pm over here but my internal clock says it's the middle of the night. Will have to force myself to keep awake.
I'm happy to be back. Took a short walk around  DuPont Circle and I liked what I saw. I had dinner and now I'm heading back to my very luxurious room (worth every single penny I spend for it!!!).
Kisses from a happy girl!

Ready to Go

Well, almost ready. Can't believe how quickly these last weeks went by. Now I am ready to discover new places though! Bon voyage and yes, I will keep you updated!

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Is it really? I'm having a hard time this time around. In Europe (at least where I live) it's raining and raining and raining. We get some nice warm days in between, that yes, but usually after one/two days it's raining again.
I am packing my bags for my US road trip (well, not really packing yet, just thinking about what I want to take) and it feels strange to wash and iron summer clothes when I am still wearing long sleeves.
I suppose I will get into total summer feeling once I leave the Dulles Airport in Washington (my app shows Washington 28°C and a sun!!!! yes!!!).
Can't wait!

Church of Wassen (Gotthard)

My recent trip to Bologna was motivated by the two art exhibitions I didn't want to miss (Street Art and Edward Hopper). There was another reason though as well.
I wanted to make the trip from Zurich to Milano by train one last time.
Last time, you wonder? Yes, one last time on the old route.
You may have heard about the inauguration of the world's longest railway tunnel through the Gotthard mountain just last week. This new tunnel will make sure that we reach Milano in just about 3 hours of time (instead of more than 4 today!) and I am super happy about it!
With this new tunnel though, we won't see the church of Wassen any longer.
What is it with this church?
Well, those of you who do not live in Europe or do never take the train may not be aware of this. But when you take (or have taken) the train from Zurich to Milano, the train kind of "climbed" the Gotthard mountain. I looked it up. The technical term is "helical tunnel" ("Kehrtunnel"). Thanks to this technique we were able to see the church of Wassen three times, each time from a different perspective.
Why is this important?
It isn't. Really. It's just that when I was a student and we went to our annual summer camp in the canton of Tessin (southern part of Switzerland) by train, our teacher just got on and on about this church. I still can hear him shouting: "And here the church again!". Back then I found this whole church thing so totally stupid but, hey, I was a teenager :-)
Nevertheless, this "stupid" church stuck with me.
Each time since then (and believe me, I took this train many many times!) I heard the teachers voice in my head when seeing the church.
With this new tunnel though, I realized, no more church of Wassen. At least not if you take the direct train to Milano.

So I decided on this Bologna trip ... to see Edward Hopper's art and ... the church of Wassen from the train one last time (smile). If my teacher only knew :-)

PS: I wanted to take a picture of the church but it was cloudy and rainy both ways. Luckily I found one on the Internet!

Friday, June 3, 2016

I've just spent two days in Bologna ... what a nice surprise it was! I decided on this trip because of two exhibits (one about Street Art and the other was about Edward Hopper - one of my favorite painters!). I was excited to visit the museums in the first place (and it they were definitely worth the trip!) but then to find such a cute city? Even more amazing. Definitely a place to visit again!
