Vacationing ... the End

Tanned and content ... That's me being back from 10 days at the beach. I had the best of times! I enjoyed the sun, the beach, visited some friends and some family visited me, I spent some very nice alone time, I bought two very nice bags (one small, dark blue, the other, big and mint green) and some even nicer cotton blouses, some books as well - did I mention that I enjoyed the sun and the beach? SMILE

Summarized: tanned and content :-)

That's what I am doing. I am vacationing. Hence, there is not much to tell. My days are wonderfully alike.

I get up at arond 7 am (without alarm clock!!) and I go on a walking tour along the beach. Then I have breakfast and am getting ready to go to the beach. Short stop to buy the daily paper and other magazines for the day and off I am to the beach. I walk back to the hotel at around 12.30, have lunch and afterwards a really nice siesta. Then some beach time again and by 8 pm I have dinner. My evenings are quiet. I either read or then have nice talks or have even nicer drinks :-) By 11 pm usually I am tired and I am headed off to my room.
To start it all again the day after!
Isn't that wonderful? My sun tan is getting nicer by the day and I already spent some serious money on clothes and bags in the mercato on Saturday. A girl doesn't need much more, does she? SMILE

My World - My Travels: Cattolica (Italy)

Once a year I don't go on a trip but on a vacation. When I can, obviously, money-wise and time-wise. I spend one week in a place that I know inside out. One week when there is nothing to discover (well, maybe the mercato and the eternal question: should I buy this or not?). Where I can simply be. I know everything. Know people. And my way around.
A real vacation.
I love to travel. I love discovering new places, get to know new people. New places. New languages.
But once a year: I spend part of my day on the beach above - feeling happy!

Being on the move

This Friday I am off to Italy. I will be spending some days at the beach. Oh yes. Can't wait. The weather in Mitteleuropa is kind of not summerly these days and therefore I am that more happy to leave for a warmer climate.
My train trip will be a challenge. I'll have three connecting trains to catch - it will be a challenge! And I will be traveling for an insane amout of time but I actually don't mind. I love being "en route". I do. Henry David Thoreau said it best:

The moment my legs begin to move,
My thoughts begin to flow.
Well, this time my legs won't move that much but just the fact that I will be "on the move" will make my thoughts go flowing.
It happens each time. Like my trip to Munich? Four and more hours sitting in an overcrowded train ... but I felt happy. "Being on the move" is good for my brain. I am in a somehow "in between" kind of state. Neither here nor there. I can't do anything (well, besides reading or listening to music or talking or looking out of the window). I can decide though to just be. I usually look out of the window and ... am.
The best meditation ever.

Munich: the museums

Munich had been on my list of the places I wanted to visit for a couple of years now. You know, the list Susan Sontag was talking about:

I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list.

Usually, a place ends up on my list because of one particular thing I want to see. Sometimes I hear about it, other times I read about it. Then, usually, I plan my trip all around this one thing I thought about at first.
For Munich the initial idea had been: visiting the museums. In particular: the various Pinakotheken.
How right I was! I visited all three of them: Alte Pinakothek (Albrecht Dürer's Autoportrait à la fourrure - wow - one of my favorite oeuvre d'art!), Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
THE suprise though in the whole "museum thing" has been another one. Sammlung Brandhorst. Not so much for what they show in the museum ... but for the building itself!

Sammlung Brandhorst
I was just ... amazed! My guide book said: ... the museum looks like an elegant young lady wearing a knitted dress by Missoni. I remember reading these words and thinking: isn't that a bit of an exaggeration?
Well, it wasn't. It wasn't at all! The words couldn't have been more accurate. I loved it, you guessed that, right?

I've spent my weekend in Munich. What to say? Well, it was hot. So hot. At least two days out of three. Especially on Saturday, at some point during the afternoon, I thought: that's it! I can't take any more heat (I did, obviously, but it was hard). And don't let me start on my hotel room. Oh my. It was a cute little room ... under the roof ... but imagine the heat :-) I was lying on my bed and thinking: that's it. It's summer :-)
Today, while downloading my pictures on the computer, I realized that I actually haven't taken that many pictures. Again, I suppose it was the heat. My brain felt like one of these sausages that the Bavarians so adore: fried!
